I’ve lived in Northern California for some fourteen years. There are quite a few palm trees here. But I’ve never seen a palm tree do this:
I was recently at a resort in San Diego for work (yes, I am lucky); all the palm trees there had these crazy-looking berry bunches.
Either I am not as observant as I’d like to think, or the palm trees in Northern California don’t do this.
Does anyone know?–Is this a specific type of palm tree? Or do all palm trees do this at a certain time of the year?
Whatever it is, I think it is striking. Here’s a close-up of the berries:

Maybe a little late, but yes, it’s a particular type of palm tree called the King palm. It’s not very common in Northern California, but once in a blue moon you’ll see it in San Jose, Oakland, or San Francisco. It’s a pretty tropical palm and doesn’t like freezing temperatures so tends to be in coastal, not inland areas of California. Inland palms are often a little tougher because they may be desert palms rather than tropical ones.
