Traveling, Then & Now (Now & Then)

In writing my last post, I found myself going through my photo archives.
What I found, I found delightful and amazing.

And, I found myself thinking about how time really does fly by. And I found myself vowing to slow down appreciate everything more.

Spotted in Saranac Lake, NY

Hm, tryouts are this Saturday. Are YOU ready?

Scenes from Saranac Lake

They’d been predicting it all week, but today the weather has changed.

It went from blissfully warm to windy, and cold, and gray.
A storm is blowing in. There are white caps on the lake. It’s now starting to drizzle.

We’re baking a stuffed chicken and starting a fire.

It’s the perfect time for a blog post, especially as I’ve been wanting to share a few scenes from Saranac Lake.

Warp Speed Indeed

I’ve finally started editing the multitude of photos from our summer vacation in Saranac Lake.

I had to share this one separately, as it is by far the most humorous shot of the collection.

Tom took this photo of Samantha’s first-ever tubing experience. At a quick glance, it seems like we are doing fine:

But when you zoom in:

You can see she is absolutely terrified.

Call me a mean mommy, but I just can’t help but laugh.

Stay Tuned

More photos of Saranac Lake–and of harvest in Napa Valley–are coming soon.

Plus, I am thinking about new things to focus on this fall–such as nightly menus with wine pairings, or, general traveling-with-kids tips.

What do you think? What would you like to hear about?

XOXO,

JLJP

Help a Swimmer Out

Samantha has always been a water baby. She’s loved the water from the moment we first had her in the bath.

She took swimming lessons from the Red Cross last summer.

She took swimming lessons from the Red Cross this summer. Six weeks of swim lessons this summer. Ahem, six long weeks of swim lessons this summer.

We did miss a lesson or two here or there (hello, kid throwing up in the pool) but overall we did pretty well. She, however, did not do so well.

Throughout the entire six weeks, she consistently refused to go under water. At her age and swim level, she needs to go under water. And, still–she won’t go under water.

We tried everything; encouraging, cajoling, humoring, incentivizing, bribing, ignoring, threatening, dunking.

No go.

And now we are getting ready for our one big trip this year to our most-favorite-place-in-the-world, Saranac Lake. Yes, LAKE. As in, we’re going to Camp Algonquin, my folks’ camp, on one of the-most-beautiful-lakes-in-the-world, and we will be spending most of our days in/on/by the lake.

She’s already saying “but I don’t wanna go unner waderrrrrr…”.

So we’re not making a big deal out of it. But, we strongly feel that it is our parental duty to help teach her to swim. And we just can’t progress if she won’t go under water.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for us to help our reluctant swimmer?

How did you get your kid(s) to go under water?
